The Glass Family of Logie Coldstone
For the purpose of uniformity, the surname Cattanach will be spelt with two t's unless is it a parish register entry and then the spelling will remain as viewed in the register.
JOHN GLASS married JANET CATTANACH in Birse on 10 April 1785. Birse Parish Registers records the following July 15 1804: Contracted John Glass Lochlee and Janet Catanach Birse and after regular proclamations and no objections made married August 11th. Banns were also called in Lochlee Angus.
How is it possible to identify John Glass as the son of Donald Glass and Helen Ogilvie from Auchabrack in the Forest of Birse?
Reverend Joseph Smith, the incumbent minister at this time also kept his own private baptism and marriage register. His entry No 131 and dated 11th August for the marriage of John and Janet reads: John Glass from Forest, now in Glenesk, and Janet Catanach, daughter of S Catanach in the Forest of Birse.
According to a stone in Birse kirkyard, John died at Heughhead in Logie Coldstone on the 3rd August 1839. Janet Cattanach, his wife, died at the same place on the 5th April 1856. Her death certificate (Logie Coldstone #2) gives her father as Shaw Cattanach, her mother was not named. The informant was her son Archibald Glass. (Records show that Shaw Cattanach was married to Jean Birss.)
Lochlee Parish Registers records the following children for John Glass and Janet Cattanach:
