Erected in memory of ALEXANDER EMSLIE, pensioner K.O.S.B. died 24 October 1899 aged 93; also his wife HELEN FERRIES died 29 May 1874

aged 50.

Erected by WILLIAM EMSLIE, Greendams to the memory of his daughter MARGARET who died Dec 6 1846 aged 8; also his son GEORGE who died June 4 1850 aged 20 months; also his son FRANCIS who d. Oct 28 1859 aged 30; also his son JAMES who died 25 May 1860 aged 26 and 10 months; also his son WILLIAM who died 25 May 1861 aged 33 and 5 months; also his son ARCHIBALD who died 21 September 1864 aged 20; also of his son JOSEPH who d. 24 January 1877 aged 45.

Erected by ROBERT EMSLIE in memory of his father WILLIAM EMSLIE late of Greendams who died 2 January 1878 aged 81. His mother MARGARET NICOL who died 17 August 1886 aged 83.

 

 

 

 

Alexander Emslie was born in Strachan, the son of William Emslie and Jane Ferries. 

1807 February 2: William Elmslie in Clashhead had a son born and afterwards baptised named Alexander. (Strachan Parish Registers)

 

Army records state that Alexander spent 20 years and 182 days in military service in India.  He was discharged in Canmore India on the 5th November 1847 being described as “worn out and unfit for further duty”.   

 

In 1852 Alexander married Helen Ferries the daughter of James Ferries and Margaret Ross. 

1852 Elmslie & Ferries:  Alexander Elmslie and Helen Ferries both of this parish were finally proclaimed here on the 25th July 1852 and married on the 31st July. (Strachan Parish Registers)

Four children were born to Alexander and Helen:

Alexander Elmslie at Burn O'Roddie and his wife Helen Ferries had a son born 18th May 1853 and baptised 19th June named James. (Strachan Parish Registers)

 

 

 

 

Alexander’s family can be found at Burn O’Roddie, Strachan on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census.

 

In 1871 Alexander is a widower and living at Castle Hill on the main road from Strachan to Birse.  1881 census he is residing at Percie, Aboyne and 1891 census he is back in Strachan at the Cottar House at Bogindreip where he died in 1899.

 


 

James Emslie (son of the above Alexander) married Isabella Glass from Auchabrack in the Forest of Birse 15 December 1877.  James is my great grandfather.

William Emslie (more than likely the first cousin of Alexander), the son of James Emslie and Helen Grant was born c1797 in Strachan.  He died 2 January 1878 at Greendams, Strachan.  There is no baptismal entry for William found to date. 

 

William married Margaret Nicol 25 November 1826.  Margaret was the daughter of Donald Nicol and Margaret Davidson and was baptised at Tillygarmond, Birse 3 April 1803.  Margaret died 17 August 1886 at Tillybreadles, Auchindoir, Aberdeenshire

 

1841 saw William and his family living at Maryhaugh, Strachan.  On the 1851/1861/1871 census they are residing at Greendams.

 

Both William and Margaret are interred in Strachan kirkyard.
