Notation at the end of District Seven
Owing to the remarks fully stated by the Minister on the last page – little remains for me to add. I may notice however, that the habits of the people are much improved within the last ten years. Since the suppression of illicit distillation, an improved system of farming has been introduced and the domestic comforts of families increased. The decease in the population is entirely owing to the causes mentioned by the clergyman. These remarks apply to every district in the parish and therefore I have thought it unnecessary to enter them to more than one enumeration schedule.
James Smith, Schoolmaster of Birse
School of Birse
June 16th 1841
By the
enumeration taken from the foregoing Schedule it appears that the population of
this parish has within the last ten years deceased to the amount of 174.
The census of 1831 being 1487 while the present census is only 1313.
The causes of the decease are various, but chiefly this from:
1st the entire suppression of illicit distillation. Previous to census 1831 the efforts of this suppression had been a decrease of population compared with 1821 (?) in the parish. At that period however this suppression being recent a good many families formerly dependent on the above system for support, had continued to remain in the parish in expectation of finding other means of livelihood. They have however been obliged to leave it, with the last ten years.
3rd
Farms
have of late been made larger, and the system of sub-letting crofts once very
common, has nearly disappeared. Both these circumstances have had a decreasing effect on the
population
4th Probably the more general introduction of threshing mills has caused
rather fewer servants to be required by farmers, and a few labourers to remove
from the parish.
These seem the chief causes of the decease of population and nothing else in reference to the census appears worthy of notice.
George Smith, Minr of Birse dated June 16th 1841
