Aboyne

The death certificate (Aboyne #4) states that the above Robert Turner is the son of Robert Turner (decd) and Jane Turner m.s. Thom (decd).  He died at the Boathouse, Balnacraig Aboyne on the 21 January 1875.  His spouse is given as Ann Bowman.

The marriage certificate of Robert Turner and Ann Bowman dated 16th Dec 1858 (Birse #6) states that Robert was a widower at the time of marriage and aged 56.  Ann Bowman (who signed by her mark X) was aged 39 and parents were Francis Bowman, wright (deceased) and Ann Bowman m.s. Anderson.  (See Bowman page)

The above George Turner born Durris is probably the son of Robert Turner and Margaret Milne b 14 Mar 1848 (IGI).  Robert Turner married Margaret Milne in Durris 29 April 1832 (IGI).  There was a large family and the last child Celia was born in Echt in 1851.  The family are residing at East Kirktown Echt on the 1851 census. 

Ann Turner (granddaughter) is the daughter of Mary Ann Turner born 19 June 1868 Aboyne.  Mary Ann Turner was born to Robert Turner and Margaret Milne 16 April 1845 Durris. 

His father Robert Turner may be the same Robert Turner who married: 

1. 1782  June 9:   Contracted Robert Turner in Torquhunlochie and Elizabeth Anderson and after regular proclamations and no objections made married July the eleventh.

2. March 6 1796:  Contracted Robert Turner and Jean Thom both in this parish and after regular proclamations and no objections being made married March 29^th.

I am basing these two marriages on the Lists of Inhabitants.  In 1794 Robert is residing at Torquhinlochy with Elizabeth Anderson and children John, William, Agnes and Elizabeth.  In 1797 a Robert Turner (still residing at Torquhinlochy) is residing with Jean Thom with children John, William and Elizabeth. 

1792 List of Inhabitants has Robert Turner aged between 40 and 50 (spouse Elizabeth Anderson) listed with a Robert Turner Senior aged between 70 - 80.

George Law and Margaret Ross married Birse 1850:  Contracted George Law and Margaret Ross in Birse and after proclamation of banns were married before witnesses.

Issue:

1. Feby 12 1852:  George Laws in Starrypools and his wife Margaret Ross had a son baptised named David.

2. November 2 1854:  George Law and his wife Margaret Ross in Starry Pools had a daughter baptised named Elizabeth.

3. William born 14 December 1856 Birse (Birse #31)

4. Robert Law born 3 Apr 1859 Birse (IGI)

Birse Kirkyard: 

In loving memory of GEORGE LAW d. 7 July 1877 aged 60, his wife MARGARET ROSS d. 20 Dec 1899 aged 80. 

St Machar #1143 states that Margaret Ross was the widow of George Law, wood sawyer.  She died at the residence of her son David Law (24 Nellfield Place, Aberdeen) who was the informant on the certificate.  Usual residence was Boat, Kincardine O'Neil.  Her parents are given as John Ross and Christina Malcolm both deceased. 

Aboyne #18 gives George Law's occupation as a sawyer and married to Margaret Ross.  His parents are given as William Law and Elizabeth Leith, both deceased.  He died at Boat of Kincardine O'Neil.  Informant on his certificate was his son David Law.   (thank you to Mairi Southall for this certificate information)

Erected by ROBERT RAE and his family in memory of his mother ANN TURNER d. 14 Mar 1870 aged 73; his father JAMES RAE d. 30 June 1870 aged 90.  His wife HELEN MERCHANT d. 8 Mar 1881 aged 51; above ROBERT RAE d. Millbank, Aboyne 24 Dec 1911 aged 88. 

The abovementioned James Rae married Ann Turner in Aboyne 23 June 1822. 

1851 census shows this family residing at Balnacraig Boat.  Ann Turner's age is given as 52 and her place of birth is Birse.

Is this the correct Ann Turner?  March 30 1799  Robert Turner in Torquhunlochie had a daughter baptised Ann.  Witnesses Geo Dunn and John Thom

Will her death certificate reveal she is the daughter of Robert Turner and Jean Thom?

Death Certificate for Helen Merchant (St Nicholas #237) states she died at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (her usual residence was Kincardine O'Neil) of septicaemia after an operation.  Her parents are given as William Merchant and Jane Brand both deceased.  Date of death was 8th March 1881. June 1 1845: Contracted David Coutts and Jane Gordon both in this parish and after proclamation without objections thereafter married.

David Coutts is the son of William Coutts and Joyce Grant chr 18 Dec 1820 Tillyhorn, Birse.  He died 22 June 1901 at Ballogie Birse. 

Jane Gordon is the daughter of Peter Gordon and Margaret McPherso.  Jane died at Ballogie 1897.

Erected by DAVID COUTTS Lodge, Ballogie in loving memory of his son GORDON ALEXANDER d. Aberdeen 22 Aug 1886 aged 30. His wife JANE GORDON d. 1 Apr 1897 aged 76, said DAVID COUTTS d. 22 June 1901 aged 80.

1848  After being contracted and after their matrimonial banns had been publicly intimated in the parish church of Birse were married George Coutts and Jane Milne before witnesses.

George Coutts is the son of William Coutts and Joice Grant chr 29 July 1818 at Turnamuck, Birse.   He died 1910 Aberdeen (Woodside #89)

Jane Milne is the daughter of Robert Milne and Catherine Cattanach chr 14 Feb 1827 at Auchaballa in Birse.  She died 18 January 1894 at Oldieleiper Birse (Birse #1)

Aboyne

John Birss, farmer aged 35 residing at Tillfoudie, parents John Birss farmer (decd) and Isabel Birss mn Begg married Mary Birss aged 26 residing at Deerhillock Parish of Birse.  Her parents are given as Arthur Birss and Mary Birss mn Mitchell (decd).  They married at Deerhillock on 19 Jan 1867.  Witnesses Charles Dunn, Minister of Birse, Duncan Ferris and Joseph Birss.  (Birse #1)

Death certificate Aboyne #3:  Mary Birss died 3rd Mar 1914 at Ivy Cottage Aboyne aged 74 years.  She was the widow of John Birss farmer.  Parents given as Arthur Birss, farmer and Mary Mitchell (both deceased).  Informant was her son John Birss residing 74 Balmoral Place Aberdeen. 

Death Certificate Birse #10:  Arthur Birss died 10 Nov 1877 at Deerhillock Birse.  He was aged 79 years.  Parents are given as Joseph Birss, farmer and Christina Alexander both deceased.  Informant was his son Joseph Birss.

Marriage banns for Arthur Birss are recorded in Birse Parish Registers:  October 26 1823  Contracted Arthur Birss in this parish with Mary Mitchell daughter of James Mitchell in this place also and after regular proclamation of marriage banns and no objections offered were married November 13^th before witnesses.

John Imray blacksmith aged 39 residing at Bottomend Aboyne, parents David Imray farmer (decd) and Ann Imray mn Johnston (decd) married Isabella Smith aged 23 residing Woodside Birse on 28 Nov 1863 at Free Manse Wagglehead.  Isabella's parents are given as William Smith general merchant (decd) and Isobel Smith ms Bain.  Witnesses, Wm Robertson, Free Church Minister Aboyne, John Fyffe and Robert Smith.   (Birse #7)

William Smith merchant, married died at Birsemore, Parish of Birse on 8th August 1857 aged 71 years.  His father is given as William Smith, carpenter, deceased.  No mother is listed.  His son Robert was the informant on the certificate (Birse #15)  (Note:  1789 list of Inhabitants has William Smith residing at Drumneachie with parents William Smith and Mary Leyel)

Isobel Smith m.s. Bain died 26th April 1885 at Ivy Cottage (North), Aboyne aged 85 years.  (Aboyne #6).  Her parents are given as James Bain, carpenter and Jane Bain m.s. Dinnie (both deceased).  The informant was her son-in-law John Imray.

July 26 1807:  Alexander Catanach in the Forest of Birse had a child baptised named Sarah.  Witnesses Mr George Sherriffs Society Schoolmaster there and Shaw Catanach in Auchabrack

1839 Erected by ALEXANDER CATANACH in Bellwood in memory of his spouse LILLIE ROSS d. 16 Apr 1831 aged 64.  ALEXANDER CATANACH late tenant of Bellwood d. 3 Aug 1853 aged 86 and is also her interred.  

Aboyne #14 states that Sarah Petrie was the widow of Charles Petrie.  She died at Belwade in Aboyne, parents are given as Alexander Cattanach and Lily Ross (both deceased).  Informant was her son-in-law Alexander Ross.

At the Church of Birse on the 13th June 1863, James Ross farm servant aged 24 residing Mains of Aboyne married Lily Ross, farmer's daughter aged 22 residing at Birkenhill, Birse. 

James Ross' parents are given as John Ross, agricultural labourer and Barbra Ross m.s. Imray.

Lily Ross' parents are given as James Ross and Mary Ross m.s. Cattanach (decd)

Witnesses were George Smith, Minister of Birse, Peter Begg and William Birse.

Birse #8 states that Mary Ross, farmer's wife, died 26th March 1857.  Her parents are given as Alexander Cattanach and Lily Ross (both deceased).  She is buried in Birse churchyard and the informant on her certificate was her husband James Ross.  (thank you to Mairi Southall for this certificate information)

One William Turner appears on the List of Inhabitants for Birse in 1819 that would be about the same age as the above William.

August 9 1805:  John Stuart in New Milne had a daughter baptised named Helen.  Witnesses Peter Stuart and George Alexander

March 9 1828:  Contracted James Brown sawer of wood with Helen Stuart in Newmill both in this parish and after proclamation of marriage banns and no objections offered were married on 20^th curt before witnesses.

Helen died at Birslawsie Cluny on 11 Dec 1875 aged 72 years.  Parents are given as John Stuart master meal miller (decd) and Charlotte Stuart m.s. Cattanach (decd).  Informant was her on James Brown.  (Cluny #21)

Her spouse James Brown died 11 Oct 1850 at Birslawsie aged 59 years.  His occupation was a farmer.  His parents are given as Robert Brown, farmer (decd) and Barbara Brown m.s. Urquhart (decd).  Informant was his son Robert Brown. (Cluny #13)

(^) James Brown is the son of James Brown and Helen Gordon Stuart.  No baptism entry can be found for him, his brother Robert or sister Helen (to date).

On the 1841 census James Brown and Helen Stuart are residing at Birkenhill (Birse) where his occupation is given as a timber merchant.  There is a daughter Helen aged 1 also residing with them.

Other children appear to residing with their grandmother (and possibly aunts) at Bankhead in Midmar.  There is a Barbra (sic) Brown aged 80 given as independent with Agnes 40 and Janet 35 also independent with children Barbra (junr) aged 9, Charlotte aged 6, Robert aged 4 and James aged 1.  These children may be the issue of James Brown and Helen Stuart and Barbara Brown aged 80 is Barbara Urquhart, their grandmother.

In 1851 the family is united at Birslawsie where James, born Cluny, is given as 48 farming 50 acres and employing 5 labs.  Helen is aged 45 and born Birse.  With them are Charlotte 19 born Aboyne, Robert 14 born Aboyne, James and Helen aged 11 born Birse (they may be twins), Peter 8 born Aboyne and  Ann 4 born Aboyne. 

By 1871 James is farming with Birslawsie jointly with his brother Robert.

James died 1 Apr 1905 aged 65 years.  He is given as a retired farmer and married to 1st Jane Reid 2nd Isabella Fraser.  Parents are James Brown farmer (decd) and Helen Gordon Stuart (decd)  His brother Robert Brown Birslawsie is the informant on the certificate. (Cluny #7)

James married (1) Jane Reid 3 July 1868 at Cluny (IGI) and (2)  Isabella Fraser, daughter of Charles Fraser, crofter (decd) and Margaret Fraser mn Gillespie (decd) on 7 Mar 1877 at the United Presbyterian Church Midmar.  (Midmar #2)

Robert married Agnes Wishart 7 Mar 1868 at Midmar (IGI) She may be the daughter of William Wishart and Ann Finlay born 4 Apr 1842 at Midmar.  The family is at Bandodle Midmar on the 1851 census. 

Various members of this family are buried in Cluny kirkyard.

August 13 1800:  Alexr Petrie in New Milne had a son baptised named Shaw.  Witnesses John Stuart and Shaw Catanach

Residing at Newmill (Birse) on the 1801 List of Inhabitants: 

Al Petrie -m- Janet Catanach with children James, John and Shaw all under 7 years of age. 

The 1851 census gives the name of Shaw Petrie's wife as Ann.  They are living at Broomfold Kincardine O'Neil with grandchildren Elizabeth Walker aged 7 and John Morrison aged 3 both born Kincardine O'Neil. 

Coull #11 states that Shaw Petrie died 1872 at Parkneuk, Corse, Coull.  His parents are given as Alexander Petrie and Janet Cattanach (both deceased).  His sister, Isabella Petrie was the informant and signed with her mark. 

Old Machar #334 states that Ann Petrie, wife of Shaw Petrie agricultural labourer, died 13 April 1866 at Wellington Street, Woodside, Aberdeen.  Her parents are given as Charles Duncan, farmer Parish of Kincardine O'Neil and Elizabeth Smith (both deceased).  Her husband was the informant on the certificate.

John Milne married Frances Farquharson Coutts (Fanny Coutts) at Feughside, Strachan on the 11 August 1866. (Strachan #6)  

He was the son of Henry Milne, farmer and Margaret Milne m.s. Thomson (decd), residing at Belblythe Strachan and aged 40. 

Fanny was the daughter of Peter Coutts and Elizabeth Duncan, she was aged 25 and residing at Percie at the time of the marriage. 

Alexander McLean, Minister of Strachan, George Grewer and Alexander Coutts were witnesses. 

William Johnston Morrison or Coutts was born 18 April 1861 at Birse.  Parents Johnston Morrison and Fanny Coutts (IGI)

Crathie and Braemar

Crathie & Braemar #7 gives the death of William Birss, single, general labourer, residing at Townhead, Crathie as 13 April 1877.  His parents are listed as Francis Birss and Elizabeth Sivewright both deceased.  The informant was his brother Charles.  His age is given as 78 years.  (thank you to Mairi Southall for this certificate information)

On the 1801 List of Inhabitants, Francis Birss is given with his spouse Elizabeth Sivewright residing at Arntilly.  Children given are John, Francis and William all under the age of 7.  There is also a John Birss listed with the family.

April 17 1799:  Mr Robert Sherrat, Overseer at Finzean, had a daughter baptised named Mary. Witnesses Mr Robt Spring from Aberdeen and Miss Mary Spring at Finzean.

Mary Ann Low is the daughter of William Low and Mary Archibald.  She was born 27 September 1869 Glenmuick (IGI)

Her parents married 6 Aug 1869 at the Manse of Glenmuick (Glenmuick #5).  Parents are given as John Low and Isabella Low m.s. Gray and James Archibald farm servant and Janet Gordon.

According to the IGI, the above children were registered to a James Bain and Mary Paterson who married 18 June 1848 at Glenmuick.

James Bain died 11 Dec 1914 at Dalmuchie Glenmuick aged 92 years. (Glenmuick #25).  His parents given on the death certificate are Robert Bain and Jane Bain m.s. Birse (both deceased).  The informant on the certificate was his son Charles who resided at Church Square in Ballater.

His spouse Mary Bain nee Paterson died 1st January 1902 aged 82 years at Dalmuchy Cottage, Glenmuick. (Glenmuick #1).  Her parents are given as Charles Paterson and Ann Paterson m.s. Robertson (both deceased).  The informant on her certificate was her son Charles then residing at Mar Cottage Ballater.

Isabella Stewart was born 14 April 1858 at Newmill in the Parish of Birse.  (Birse #10).  Her parents are given as Peter Stewart gamekeeper (master) and Mary Stewart m.s. Smith. 

Peter Stewart aged 26 gamekeeper and under gamekeeper and son of James Stewart retired Schoolmaster and Catherine Stewart m.s. Duncan married Mary Smith aged 20 daughter of William Smith merchant and Isabella Smith m.n. Bain on 4 May 1856.  (Birse #3)

Catherine Stewart m.s. Duncan died 11 January 1864 at Oldieleiper in the Parish of Birse aged 62 years.  (Birse #2)  Her parents are given as Peter Duncan and Jane Duncan m.s.
